Metito and Orascom Construction have formed a joint venture to build a massive desalination plant in Abu Dhabi. Orascom Construction will construct, own, and operate the facility alongside ADNOC and TAQA.
Seawater desalination mega project overall cost
The overall project will cost 2.4 billion dollars and will include massive seawater purification and water transportation projects.
As ,the greenfield project will be paid for for 30 years through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) using a construct, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) approach. ADNOC and TAQA will control 51% of the SPV, while Orascom Construction and Metito will possess 49% (24.5% each).
Project description
The massive project will include a greenfield seawater nanofiltration plant with a treatment capacity of more than 110 million imperial gallons per day (500,000 m3/day), as well as seawater inflow and outfall facilities, pumping facilities, and a 75-kilometre water delivery pipeline.
It will also comprise a more than 230-kilometre in-field distribution network to help with reservoir pressure maintenance in Abu Dhabi's Bab and Bu Hasa fields.
Project importance
The project will substitute for the current aquifer water injection systems used for keeping reservoir pressure in ADNOC's onshore oil fields, ensuring long-term water supply for ADNOC's onshore operations while protecting the UAE's natural aquifer sources.
In addition, compared to the existing injection system, the project will increase power efficiency by up to 30% and lower ADNOC's environmental footprint by up to 30%.
